New Cone Beam CT Brings 3-D Views to dental X-Ray Imaging
Grandview Dental | August 7, 2014New Cone Beam CT Brings 3-D Views to X-Ray Imaging
Over the past century, X-ray imaging has allowed dentists to make incredible strides in dental diagnosis and treatment. Yet traditional X-rays – including the latest panoramic systems — give only a flat, two-dimensional view of the patient’s mouth, jaws and teeth.
Recently, dental imaging took a major leap forward with a technology known as Cone Beam Computed Tomography. We’re excited to be among the first Columbus, Ohio dentists to offer this revolutionary 3-D imaging to our patients.
Similar to CT scans used in other areas of medicine, the non-invasive Cone Beam CT technology produces high-definition 3-D images that clearly the internal structure of the mouth and teeth in ways that are not visible using flat, two-dimensional X-rays.
Fast, Pain-Free Imaging
Patients are amazed at how easy it is to obtain 3-D images. In just 14 seconds, our CBCT scanner rotates around your head, obtaining up to 600 distinct images of the mouth, teeth, jaw and surrounding facial structure. Scans take less time and use less X-ray radiation than other types of CT radiography.
Computer software then quickly produces 3-D images, giving Dr. Thompson and Dr. Hoellrich an unparalleled view of your teeth, cavities, fillings, nerves, root canals, sinuses and bone structure. They’ll show you the images on the computer screen and explain how what they’re seeing affects your treatment plan.
Better Images = Better Outcomes
We believe that cone beam technology has the potential to advance nearly every aspect of dental care. The 3-D images allow Dr. Thompson and Dr. Hoellrich to see dental problems that conventional X-rays – even our new panoramic X-ray system – may not pick up. As a result, we may be able to:
- More accurately diagnose your dental conditions
- Reduce the need for invasive procedures
- Shorten your treatment time, and
- Improve your treatment outcomes
From locating children’s impacted teeth, to guiding intricate root canal procedures, to identifying potentially cancerous oral lesions, these exceptionally crisp, detailed images will help us deliver optimal outcomes for our patients.
More Accurate Placement of Dental Implants, Crowns and Bridges
The 3-D images provide greater accuracy for measuring and placing dental implants, crowns and bridges, and other dental prosthetics, giving better and more predictable results. Thanks to this new technology, Dr. Thompson and Dr. Hoellrich anticipate placing more dental implants at Grandview Dental Care, reducing the need for you to visit a specialist.
Already, CBCT scans have helped us diagnose infections that weren’t visible using digital panoramic or bitewing X-rays. In several patients, we’ve used the 3-D images to more accurately pinpoint the source of their pain, allowing faster and more effective treatment.
