Help us Help others this Holiday!

My staff came to me with this idea and I always say things work even better when it’s the staff’s idea!  We are collecting unwrapped toys and donations for the Firefighters 4 Kids as well as non-perishable food for donations to local food pantry.  You can drop off your donations from now until December 22nd and we will deliver them to the appropriate locations for distribution to local families in need. If you would like to drop off items after our business hours we will have a plastic tub on our front porch. Thank you for helping us support this … Continue reading

How to have fun over the holidays and not blow your weight loss success!

Do the Mariah Carey diet!  Ok, not really, but do watch portion size.  If you are going to “cheat”, eat as much as would fit in the palm of your hand, that way you’ll always be able to keep your portion size under control. Write out a Holiday Workout Calendar – Holidays are some of the craziest and busiest of the year so go online and find a blank calendar page for the month of December and literally schedule all your workouts now.  Make sure you are getting in at least 3 days a week.  Voila!  Now you have 12 … Continue reading

Operation Gratitude was a success!

Thank you for your participation in our Operation Gratitude effort to send a little holiday cheer to support our troops.  We collected and shipped 33 pounds of stuff thanks to our generous patients and friends. In the month of November we collected items recommend by the group Operation Gratitude and we are shipping them out today so that they can be distributed to the troops for the holiday. We will be collecting items again next year beginning in September and October so stayed tuned to the blog for more information.  You can always search on “operation gratitude” on the blog to … Continue reading

Anti-Aging Dentistry

Anti-aging products and services are all the rage these days.  As dentists we are in an anti-aging business.  Even if you choose not to improve your smile with whitening or cosmetic dentistry, coming to the dentist on a regular basis can significantly improve the “life expectancy” for a fully functioning set of teeth. Our philosophy and goal as a dental practice is the total absence of dental disease for every patient in the practice.  Some patients with gum disease have to work a little harder at it but it is possible to prevent dental diseases, deterioration, and facial aging associated … Continue reading

Wii is great family fun!

My wife and I got a Wii last year for Christmas.  Well, actually it was an impulse buy on eBay sometime in November 2007 but she justified it as a Christmas gift for the family.  We played Wii bowling, tennis, a lot last winter along with Rayman Raving Rabbids.  The Wii is just plain fun.  Many of the games aren’t controlled by a complicated sequence of buttons but instead you move your body and the Wiimote to make things happen on the screen.  And often times the results are hilarious to those playing and watching. With the holidays approaching if … Continue reading

How to choose your dental benefits plan

It’s open enrollment time of year…… It’s that time of year again when patients begin asking which plan they should choose during their employers open enrollment period.  So we thought we would define the different flavors of dental benefit plans out there. There are probably 50 to 100 different dental benefits providers in the Columbus Ohio area.  And within those plans there are even more different flavors of the plans that were negotiated between your employer and the Insurance company.   A Metlife plan at company A isn’t the same plan as the Metlife Plan at company B. Dental Plans typically … Continue reading

How dental insurance companies calculate the UCR fee

What does UCR fee stand for? Well… the letters in UCR stand for Usual, Customary, and Reasonable.  Almost sounds like the Insurance company is doing extensive surveys of dental fees in your zip code and then taking the average, say 70% – 75%,  fee.  But guess what, that is not what the Insurance company does. Insurance companies  calculate the UCR in differing ways, but it’s usually between the 50th and 80th percentile of what fees are in a geographical area.  The geographical area is not limited to a certain radius around a certain zip code.  It can include an entire state and includes all the rural, urban, … Continue reading

Give our troops some Holiday Cheer!

I just recently came across this organization and I thought what a great way to make a soldier’s day!  Also, a great way to get rid of some excess Halloween Candy. Grandview Dental Care will be donating toothbrushes and toothpaste through Operation Gratitude an organization that sends care packages to U.S. troops.  In addition we will pay the shipping on any other items our patients or community wants to donate to Operation Gratitude.  Just drop off any of the items on the Operation Gratitude wishlist to our office by Monday November 24th and we will ship them to Operation Gratitude … Continue reading

Does choosing a dentist on a list save me money or my insurance company money?

So if my out of pocket is less if I go to a dentist on a list, why wouldn’t I just go to a dentist on a list to save money. Whew that was a long headline!  Do you make all of your buying decisions based on cost?  Do you buy the cheapest car?  The cheapest television?  Go to the least expensive place to eat every time you go out?  A dentist on an insurance list has agreed to cut their fees in order to get on the list.  They typically get on the list because they need new patients.  Ask yourself, why … Continue reading

Is Dental Insurance, Insurance?

I guess that depends on your definition of insurance but when you compare dental insurance to the other insurances that you carry on your home, car, life, and medical it seems like more of a dental maintenance plan rather than insurance. Dental Insurance … it’s not really insurance at all Insurance is defined as a third party taking the risk of a catastrophic loss.  The annual limit of most dental plans is a maximum reimbursement of $1200.  Now, you may not have $1200 in your wallet and it is a lot of money, but there is nothing catastrophic about $1200.  It … Continue reading
